THE TOPICS
The overall topic of the exhibition was inclusive and sustainable Indian urbanisation. Under this topic 10 students and 2 Studios of 5 different Planning Departments and the Industrial Design Department of SPA exhibited their work at Urban Samvaad.
Together they created an interdisciplinary journey consisting of OUR MOHALLA (Neighbourhood), OUR PARIVAHAN (Transport) and OUR KSHETRA (Region). Throughout these three areas of Urban Samvaad, two cross-over projects on Urban Energy Management and Innovative Toilet Designs were presented.

OUR MOHALLA
The mohalla is where the city happens. People live, consume, work, recreate and move in their neighbourhoods, chowks and mohallas. Urban development as well as its challenges can be witnessed and understood in this micro-cosmos. Life in the mohalla shows the interlinkages between the different planning spheres and highlights the necessity for a holistic approach towards urbanization in India.
The Urban Samvaad Mohalla invites you into the houses of Raipur and shows how to overcome housing shortage.
At the mohalla, engage with questions of how mixed land use can be a potential and not an environmental hazard. Following the idea of bringing together different urban functions at one place, enter into houses, where home-based enterprises are operating.

Mixed use development has existed in our historic cities, prevails today and is being planned for future development. The thesis compares outcome of this strategy in two scenarios; one in a planned way and other in an organic. The planned path leads to bare minimum issues while the other results in varied issues like pollution, infrastructure stress, traffic congestion, health and safety. Mixed use development can be both a boon and a bane; the path we choose will decide what it is going to be.

Home Based Enterprises are small, capital saving and labour intensive enterprises in nature. They are a solution generated by opportunity deprived (poor or uneducated) families for their living. My research aims on studying their economic and spatial linkages and their impact on living environment with focus on socio-economic, housing, health and environment aspects.

MAKING HOUSES AFFORDABLE : An alternative finance model for low income Housing
It is a myth that the slum dwellers live in such conditions because of lack of money. It is the existing financial mechanisms that hinder the urban poor to attain a respectable shelter. It had been found that the slum dwellers can pay upto Rs. 4 lakh for better shelter. If this potential is properly utilized, it can provide better housing for a more equal society. DISASTERS IN DELHI: Planning for Local Level Disaster Resilience
India’s disaster management efforts have largely consisted of rescue and rehabilitation efforts after a disaster has struck. There is a need to understand that hazards like earthquake, flood etc. are natural phenomenon and disaster losses are preventable, if initiatives are taken to increase disaster resilience of an area before the hazard turns into disaster. My research identifies components of Disaster Resilience and ranks six areas in Delhi according to their level of Disaster Resilience.

Houses for whom? Slum development as strategy for housing shortage
This project attempts to solve the housing problems in Raipur by focusing on slums which constitute 36% of the city’s population. Focusing on the development of slums will help to cover 70% of the housing shortage. This is achieved through in-situ up-gradation, relocation and redevelopment strategies.

OUR PARIVAHAN
Urban mobility enables access to services, livelihood opportunities, education and participation in the urban public sphere. Transport is not only the movement of vehicles but it opens up a city to its inhabitants or creates boundaries for them. In Indian cities the transport system has come under a considerable amount of pressure due to the increase of private and motorized vehicles and the inadequacy and sup-optimal use of the public transport system. The number of vehicle ownership per 1000 people has doubled in the last 10 years.
In the Urban Samvaad Parivahan, get to know more about how a well-planned transport system fosters decentralization and decreases congestion. Explore a model for better pedestrian facilities and understand how tourism and transport could promote inclusive urban growth if analysed and planned together.

For many years now, tourism has been playing an important role in the development of India. But little has been done from the government’s end to promote tourism in a sustainable and a more regulated way. Among the major factors that could help in achieving this goal is the TRANSPORT SYSTEM of a tourist place. The thesis work explores the perspective of a tourist and expertise of a transport planner in developing a transport system of a resort town in a way that can help in promoting tourism in a more regulated way.

OUR KSHETRA
Cities cannot be understood or planned without taking a look beyond their borders. Climate Change, rural-urban migration, land conversions and production chains show how cities and regions are inextricably linked. The boundaries established between cities and non-urban areas through political schemes and programmes do not always fit holistic planning requirements. Not all problems in a city, as for example water shortage or land utilization, can be solved only within city boundaries.
In the Urban Samvaad kshetra explore the relevance of ports for urban development in India and how natural resources like water does not flow according to municipal boundaries, and therefore need a regional planning perspective.

In recent years it has become clear that local water depletion and pollution are one of the most upcoming critical issues. This thesis focuses on understanding the water footprint scenario of Pune region and the extent to which it can be reduced. The study reveals the importance of analysis of the water footprint of a region to get a complete picture of the relation between water availability and the use of water resource.

With the mandate that Design has the potential to improve the quality of life, preserve the environment, reduce disease and uphold human dignity, the Design Studio of Industrial Design, with its 19 students spent 10 weeks reinventing Sanitation Solutions and the Toilet itself.
The attempt of this exercise was to knit together our understanding of human behaviour, habits, our diverse socio-cultural contexts, economic considerations and advancement in technology to arrive at design interventions that address areas in sanitation and hygiene, which are peculiar and specific to our context.
